What Parents Have To Know About the Metaverse

As a community, we feel and understand the consequences of social media. Social media has been linked to body-image issues, depression, and anxiety, yet we continue to use it. We are part of a generation that has grown up learning how to engage with social media since teenage-hood, but what about children? Children will have grown up with social media from a very young age. With their sponge-like ability to soak up information, their minds can very easily be influenced by what they see. The release of the Metaverse marks an advancement in social media, but this isn’t necessarily a good thing.

The Metaverse is developed by companies that rely on the younger generation’s social media addiction. So, how exactly will this platform affect children?

  1. Cyberbullying is a serious concern, as kids can be harassed online or exposed to hate speech. This can severely impact the child’s sense of safety and self-worth.

  2. Lack of privacy is an equally concerning issue. Children may unknowingly share personal information such as their address or other details.

  3. Physical side-effects must be considered. Prolonged use of VR headsets may lead to symptoms like nausea, dizziness, and headaches.

  4. Psychological risks will pose an even greater threat. As children feel much more immersed in social media because of the use of VR headsets, they may feel tempted to spend more time on social media than usual. A lack of exercise, exposure to sunlight, and socializing can lead to depression. Triggering content they are exposed to may lead to some acute anxiety. Brain development may be hindered as they are overstimulated for long periods of time and spend less time with educational content.

So, how do we protect children from these negative effects?

  1. Monitor your child’s social media usage

  2. Restrict access to dangerous or explicit content

  3. Have honest conversations with them about the dangers of social media. Don’t leave them in the dark!

Parents must stay informed to navigate this new digital world better!
